This house, known as Rosebay, is in a historic resort community of about 1,600 in southwest North Carolina. It was expanded, starting in 2015, with the addition of a guest suite and a detached two-car garage with a workshop. Other recent improvements include a paved driveway that replaces gravel, and a new roof.

The property, which is less than a mile from the town’s commercial area, is in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, about 46 miles southeast of Asheville, N.C., and 31 miles northeast of Greenville, S.C. The Tryon International Equestrian Center and Resort, which holds horse shows and has lodgings, restaurants and shops, is about 16 miles northeast.

Indoors: The home has two levels and multiple entrances. A solid-wood door inset with colorful glass squares opens into a living room with green walls, a brick fireplace set in a wall of floor-to-ceiling bookshelves, hardwood flooring and a bay window framing a view of Hogback Mountain. The adjacent dining room has its own exterior entrance, a similar picture window and view, the reverse face of the living room’s brick chimney and paneled walls painted ruby red.

The kitchen was updated in the mid-2000s with white-painted wood cabinets, subway-tile backsplashes, stainless-steel appliances, a farmhouse sink and black-and-white checkerboard-patterned floor tile. Next to the kitchen is an enclosed porch with exposed beams, brick floors and a half bathroom (now with striped walls and a tiny corner sink) that would have originally been used by the gardener when this was an outdoor space. A second enclosed porch with yellow wood-sided walls and hardwood flooring has functioned as a sunroom. An interior window looks into the adjacent media room, which has rust-colored walls and a wood-burning stove.

The guest suite is reached through the media room or by a door off the driveway. Its cathedral ceiling, mullioned windows, stained wood flooring and trim, and stone fireplace were designed to blend in with the original structure. A wet bar is built into a niche on the fireplace wall and covered in chalkboard paint. The guest suite bedroom has red walls and a stained-glass window; the bathroom includes a large walk-in shower and a washer and dryer.

Two bedrooms with a Jack-and-Jill bathroom between them form the original main-floor primary suite. One bedroom has blue walls and hardwood floors; the second, used as a sitting room, is papered in a flamboyant bird print. The bathroom includes green tile floors and a shower over a tub.

The fourth bedroom is on the lower level and includes a door that leads out to the pool terrace. There is also a lower-level bathroom.

Outdoor space: The extensive property includes a white-gated entrance, rolling lawns, mature trees, a butterfly garden and a gazebo next to the pool area. From the pool, you can see a mountain called Rocky Spur.

A shingled house built in 1997, with two bedrooms and two bathrooms, on a 0.9-acre lot

The current owners commissioned a Connecticut architect named Robert Page to design this home, which evokes the rustic feeling of a Maine boathouse. It is one of two condominiums (the other is an adjacent Victorian shingle-style house) and has exclusive use of its lot. The property is in central Connecticut, a block from Long Island Sound, in a FEMA “AE” zone that requires flood insurance. (The listing agents estimate the cost at $650 a year.)

The home is about a mile south of businesses along Route 1 and three and half miles west of Hammonasset Beach State Park. Its granite foundation was sourced from the quarry in the village of Stony Creek, Conn., that supplied the stone used in the base of the Statue of Liberty.

The second level is centered on a great room entirely clad in wood, with an exposed-brick chimney rising to the top of the vaulted ceiling. The open kitchen includes tiger-maple cabinets, and there is a second bedroom and bathroom with a shower over a tub.

A staircase with a decorative wrought-iron railing takes you from the ground floor to the second level, and an enclosed staircase rises to the third level, where a catwalk connects a den to an office with a Juliet balcony.

This brick, shingled and stucco-faced house is in the Inner Richmond neighborhood, a block below the Presidio and four blocks east of a boulevard that leads across to the Golden Gate Bridge and the Marin Headlands (to the north) and to Golden Gate Park and Daly City (to the south). Shops, food stores, restaurants and public transportation nodes line Clement Street, one block south. The University of California San Francisco Medical Center at Mount Zion is less than two miles east.

Indoors: The front door, set in a covered porch, opens to an interior with white-painted walls and hardwood floors. Turning left takes you into a 14-foot-wide living room with a wood-burning brick fireplace along the front wall. The dining room is toward the rear of the building; it has extensive paneling, a box-beam ceiling and built-in storage with drawers, cubbies and leaded-glass cabinet fronts. The kitchen, which completes the circle, with entrances from the hallway off the foyer and from the dining room, includes vintage cabinets and has recently been refreshed with new paint and vinyl-tile flooring.

Both bedrooms are on the second floor. The larger is almost 14 by 16.5 feet and has built-in drawers and a windowed niche. The smaller measures about 10 by 14.5 feet and connects to a bathroom with claw-foot tub and shower head. (This bathroom can also be entered from the hallway.)

The basement level is unfinished. It includes a washer and dryer.

Outdoor space: A narrow terrace off the dining room walks down to the basement level.
